Tom Spender

I’m a freelance journalist and photographer based in Beijing, China. Previously, I’ve reported from countries including Burma (Myanmar), China, Thailand, Syria, Israel/Palestine, Oman and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

As a freelancer, I’ve written for a range of media including IRIN, a web-based humanitarian news agency run by the UN; The National, a daily newspaper published in Abu Dhabi, UAE; the Al Jazeera website; and the Christian Science Monitor – links to stories in these and other publications can be found on the Stories page. My most recent full-time position was at The National in the UAE, while in the UK I have worked at local and national newspapers and news agencies.

I love photography and have had photos published alongside many of the stories I write, including a few audio slideshows – check out the Photos and TV/Slides pages.

I also work as a freelance translator – check out the Translation page. I’m fluent in French and German and speak varying amounts of Spanish, Arabic and Mandarin Chinese.
